Shocker for Kalonzo as Mutua surges ahead in popularity index
The fate of Wiper party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka in national politics now hangs in a balance after a recent opinion survey placed firebrand Machakos governor, Alfred Mutua at par with him in popularity.
The survey, by reputable firm, Ipsos Synovate ranked Dr Mutuas popularity for the 2022 presidential race at 6%-same as Kalonzo, who is the deputy principal in the opposition coalition, NASA.
While Dr Mutua, who is the Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader, declared interest in the 2022 presidency barely three months ago after joining politics in 2013, Kalonzo-one of the longest reigning politicians in the country has been in the presidential race before.
Until Mutuas entry into politics after being elected first governor of Ukambanis richest county, the former Vice President enjoyed the tag of regional kingpin for about three and a half decades.
But now things appear to have gone haywire for Kalonzo, who together with his two other co-principals in the opposition, Moses Wetangula and Musalia Mudavadi are still grappling with the latest turn of events where their coalition leader, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga held post-election talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Sources close to Kalonzo have disclosed news of Dr Mutuas rising political star have not augured well with Kalonzo. Kalonzo is a coward, unreliable and incapable of taking a firm position as a politician. His failure to take oath alongside Raila has completely depleted his political stature, said one of Kalonzos allies.
The source further disclosed that Dr Mutuas abrupt surge in political popularity especially in lower Eastern region will form behind the curtains agenda for the scheduled meeting convened by Kalonzo in Komarock ranch, Matungulu on April 2nd where the subject of Ukambanis political destiny will be discussed.
The opinion poll placing Mutua at par with Kalonzo only served to aggravate the agenda of the proposed meeting. From the onset, it was intended to explore ways in which Kalonzos dwindling political image can be salvaged.
In the opinion poll, Deputy President, William Ruto emerged the most preferred presidential candidate with 28 percent rating, followed closely by Baringo senator, Gideon Moi with 14 percent rating.
