Police have offered a Ksh20,000 reward to anyone who has information on Benson Wazir Chacha Masubo, the man accused of obtaining money from MPs by false pretense.
Masubo obtained cash under the disguise of Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege and Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti has asked members of the public to help in locating him.
The 25-year-old supposedly gained access to the politicians during his tenure at the Ministry of Devolution.
Police also believe that his friendship with a former legislator assisted him in collecting the personal contact information about the public figures.
According to Kinoti, investigations uncovered that Chacha used the Murang’a representative’s national identification number to register fake phone numbers which were then used to conduct the scam.
“He used an ID number of a former MP to register an M-Pesa account in the name of Sabina Wanjiku Chege. He did this in Donholm and we have all the details.
“Police have in the last week been trying to get Chacha but it has been in vain. Instead, he has switched off his five mobile phones and gone into hiding,” Kinoti revealed, urging the suspect to surrender.
The DCI boss added that the attendant who registered the four numbers was in custody and would be arraigned in court on March 26.
Speaking , Ms Chege stated that the allegations linking her to the man are false noting that a concrete report from the National Assembly Security Committee will be released in the next coming days.
“I am not related to the man in question. Kinoti said that the accused has a special relationship with the complainant but I am not the only complainant,” Sabina commented.
