A man will serve six months in jail if he does not pay a fine of Sh20,000 for beating up his mother-in-law.
Senior Resident Magistrate Erick Malesi found Earnest Lukhafwa guilty of assaulting Susan Egesa, 70, on January 8, 2017, at Namirama village, Navakholo sub-county, in Kakamega County after she found him felling a tree in her compound without her permission.
“When I confronted him over the matter, he slapped me in the face and beat me with a cane,” Ms Egesa told the court.
Egesa sustained serious leg and hand injuries and bruises on her face.
Mr Lukhafwa, who denied committing the offence, asked for leniency, saying his two wives had died leaving him with the burden of raising their seven children alone.
But the magistrate ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond any reasonable doubt. [Jack Murima]
